Tell the stories of the people in the community in which you live.
Journalism starts from the ground (grassroots) up.
I highly recommend getting out in your town and reporting on happenings in your community.
Try and get an interview with your local/state/federal representatives too.
Start local Zach.
That’s how I did it mate in the 1990s.
Started reporting locally, got me a gig at the Murdoch owned weekly local newspaper.
Start locally, work your way up.
And yeah, do some of your other story ideas too.
Do it well, and locals will appreciate your efforts.
Even your school, your teachers. Interview them, turn it into an article about ‘school life’ in your town.
Even today, I go back to where it all began for me. Saturday afternoons across Victoria (Australia) local (Aussie Rules) footy is played. I started covering this is as kid cadet. I still enjoy it today.
Get involved in your community. Your local community groups. Find out what they’re doing. Tell their stories.
I look forward to reading your work. Keep going young Zach.
If you want any of my Uni journo degree notes, stuff from my early days, happy to share with you.
FYI. I qualified as cadet under Murdoch in the 90s as a teen. In 2017 I went to Uni and di a journo degree too. Want all my notes? Happy to share.
Write about how the Loyal Order of Moose used the KKK by-laws to write their own by-laws. Write about how they still didn't accept black members in the 1980s. What other Orgs are still run that way.
